Magic in The Illuminated World is temporary suspension of natural law broadly considered to exist under two main categories:
- Invocational magic, indicating that which must be petitioned and mediated through a higher power
- Wyrd magic a.k.a. The Second Science, the study and application of material, mental and supernatural processes of change in subordination to the will of the practitioner.
Clerics always use Invocational magic. Mages use some combination of Invocational and Wyrd magic as befits their needs (though none truly know what kind of magic they're using).
Invocational Magic
Invocational magic is commonly imparted through years of catechism within a church or cult, although can be learned independently through divine intervention.
Wyrd Magic
Wyrd magic is a highly secretive practice, consisting of networks of occult societies that have complex relationships with one another and are constantly warring with each other about matters that range from existential to trivial.
